Bobeche’s design is inspired by Prohibition-era speakeasies and Alice in Wonderland whimsy. It's almost invisible from street level, aside from the small sign.
A trip down the staircase reveals exposed pipes, beams and concrete walls. These industrial bones clash with rich woods and pops of colour throughout the furnishings. There are shared cocktails (for up to four) served in near-fluorescent teapots, which would be at home on the Mad Hatter’s table.
These and the single-serve cocktails don’t hold back. A menu of more obscure classics, such as the Brooklyn, Singapore Sling, Bamboo and Hot Buttered Rum harness the power of premium spirits and pack a serious punch. Speaking of which, the Fish House Punch is the pick of the teapots, featuring Pampero Añejo rum, Hennessy VS Cognac and peach liqueur.
There are 27 whiskies on offer. A selection of absinthe is also available, so you can follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh and others who were seeking the real Lewis Carroll experience. The wine and beer lists take a quality over quantity approach.
American, Asian and French-influenced plates are executed with flair rarely seen in a small bar, ensuring drinkers become diners. Juicy burgers and sandwiches are more than a handful.
Pork belly, steak tartare and duck liver parfait display finesse. Well worth a trip down the rabbit hole.
