Studio 37

For most of its life, the two-storey Pakenham Street Arts Space was a shipping warehouse. These days its 1907 interior is mostly bare.

It features exposed beams, polished concrete and plenty of art. It’s home to a central gallery, 36 studios and 36 passionate artists. One final space, Studio 37, is dedicated to passion for something else: coffee.

Fancy meals don’t impress owners Tom Wearne and Lindsey Matthews. Their game is simple food and bold coffee done well. You can choose from a long list of jaffles, a daily soup or salad, a fresh juice or one of their many homemade treats.

For Wearne it’s all about the regulars. They flow from the nearby university and offices and he greets each by name from behind his La Marzocco machine. The cafe’s full-bodied blends are from the Sydney-based Single Origin Roasters. It’s one of the roaster’s only WA customers.

PSAS’s gallery area exhibits international and Australian artists, and occasionally transforms the cafe into a small bar for openings and events.
