Some beaches have all the luck. Leighton is not only beautiful, but it’s also become a breakfast hotspot. There’s Bib & Tucker with its awesome views, and Brazilian food truck Comida do Sul, which dishes out fresh coconuts and coxinhas.
With breakfast served until 3pm daily, Shipping Lane is arguably Leighton Beach’s most popular choice. The hero dish is slow-poached Tasmanian salmon, cooked sous vide at 40 degrees and then topped with avo, truffle oil, a poached egg, crispy bacon and capers.
Lunch and dinner show off chef Luke Lee’s skill with Asian flavours. Hits include the sake-soaked edamame, soft-shell crab in wasabi ponzu, and the green-tea noodle salad. Best part? Shipping Lane is BYO and the well-stocked Old Bridge Cellars is just a couple of blocks down the road.
The restaurant’s name isn’t the only nod to the waterway just outside its door: rusty walls of shipping containers line the bar and a map of Fremantle’s actual shipping lane hangs near the register.
If you’ve got Fido in tow, or you simply like the idea of dining with a briny breeze on your cheek, then grab a table on the terrace out front, kick off your thongs and stay a while.
