An industrial unit in O’Connor isn’t most people’s idea of a go-to coffee spot, but that’s where you’ll find Pound Coffee Roastery, known to Perth’s coffee faithful.
Roaster and co-owner Justin Gardner is an ex-chef, and his approach to roasting is the same as it is with food. Quality and provenance of the beans are high on his agenda, as is treating them with respect and having a keen sense for balancing their characteristics.
While you can pick up Pound at Fresh Provisions and a number of other cafes (Little Willy’s, Mary Street Bakery) a visit to the roastery is more than just a retail experience.
Gardner, fully caffeinated, will talk you through the assorted beans without resorting to the kind of coffee talk that turns the novice off. Also look out for regular cupping sessions (held in O’Connor) where Gardner treats tasting coffee like wine. It's a real chance to understand the ins and outs of your daily cup.
