An old boiler at the back of the courtyard is the only feature left as reminder that this space was once a laundry dating back to the 1930s.

With a sea of cafes in North Perth, owner Oscar Boyne recognised that he needed to diversify. After five years of owning cafe Il Circolo, the space next door became available to expand into. He took it over in 2015 rechristened the whole site The Old Laundry.

It’s a light and airy space dominated by timber and exposed brick. One half services seated diners. The other is the bar, with bi-fold windows that open out to the street. Here you’re likely to spark a conversation with someone from the neighbourhood who’s walked down to their local.

The menus are completely overhauled seasonally. Brunch strikes a good balance between breakfast-y dishes and those suited to the right of 11am. Dinner sees share plates favoured, with a handful of no-share dishes for the traditionalists.

There’s a long list of cocktails and a wine list filled with new- and old-world titles, all of them available by the glass. Northbridge Coffee Roasters supply the goods earlier in the day.

On quieter weekdays the venue hosts quiz nights with themed topics such as Disney, Friends and Seinfeld.
