Eamon Sullivan has smashed swimming world records, earned three Olympic medals and won Celebrity MasterChef. His restaurant, Bib & Tucker, has lines out the door, and he has another venue in Subiaco, Louis Baxters. His third venture, May Street Larder, is no exception to this track record.

This neighbourhood cafe and part-time restaurant occupies the site of a former fast-food joint on Canning Highway. The vast open space is now fashionably stripped back, framed by large windows and furnished with raw timber, bric-a-brac stools and industrial pendant lights.

A well-stocked counter of the usual suspects appeals to the takeaway crowd, accompanied by coffee from Campos. House-made pickles, preserves and spice blends can also be taken home.

The breakfast menu has a split personality. There’s Cocowhip bowls, topped with lupinola (granola made with lupin flakes), best enjoyed with kombucha, a fermented tea. At the other end of the spectrum there’s waffles with buttermilk fried chicken; best matched with a peanut-butter-and-chocolate milkshake.
