Juicy Beetroot Cafe
At this vego cafe you’ll see new-wave hippies share table space with Fremantle Dockers players, who visit the place religiously.
Run by a German man who goes by the name Shantanu (he’s a devoted follower of the Indian healer and teacher, Amma), the food reflects his spiritual inclinations. In fact regulars – some of whom have come nearly every weekday for a decade – reckon the hearty, Hare Krishna-inspired food is better than medicine.
Don’t be fooled by the cafeteria-style fit-out, with scattered, no-frills chairs and brimming bain-maries: the homemade food is restaurant-worthy. With ingredients sourced from local grocers such as Kakulas Sister and Indian stores, the revolving curries and salads are doled out heftily, and with surprising frequency.
Best get in early (11am) before the locals snap up the good stuff. Cash only.
