Engine Room Espresso is what happened when three coffee-loving firefighters opened their own cafe. The store changed hands in 2018, but Engine Room is still a friendly walk-in selling good coffee and basic eats.

Choose from the house blend coffee or the single-origin bean of the month, produced by WA boutique roastery, Pound. The food includes authentic bagels from The Holy Bagel Co., pumpkin bread, organic crumpets and takeaway breakfast cups in the fridge, if you want your granola or muesli on the run.

If you want to stay awhile, you could do worse than hang out here and enjoy the passing pedestrians on Fitzgerald Street. Inside there’s some casual seating and newspapers, and quirky decor touches, including a rusted metal stag head keeping an eye on things.

Chairs and tables are available in a rear laneway for those keen to catch some air.
