Chapels on Whatley
Chapels on Whatley reflects a unique blend of Asian and European cultures, thanks to the Eurasian background of co-owner Glenn Bartel. Run by passionate tea enthusiasts, the cafe offers a range of high quality oolong, green, white, flower and pu-erh (aged) teas, sourced directly from Chinese tea farms. These are complemented by the cafe’s many decorative curios, which are sourced from the owners’ nearby store selling Asian antiques and homewares.
Open all day and for dinner on weekends, the cafe offers Eurasian fare, mixing up the influences of Malaysia, China and India with that of British and other European cuisines. Take the breakfast menu, which ranges from bee hoon noodle omelette, to green pandan coconut fritters with mango and passionfruit coulis.
For lunch and dinner, the beef rendang is a popular choice, as is the French-Vietnamese charcuterie tasting plate. Sweets available all day include house-made macarons and Eurasian desserts such as rhubarb and coconut clafouti.
On weekend evenings, dinner is spiced up with live jazz and lounge acts. Fully licensed, the well-priced wine list favours WA and SA wines, with a range of cocktails to back it up.
