Chalkys Espresso Bar
After years of working Melbourne’s cafe scene, the salt, sand and sun called Sean Mulcock back home to the west. Two years later, he and wife Sarah founded Chalkys Espresso Bar in Fremantle’s old Municipal Tramways depot.
The arched colonial windows circa 1905 are still there, but they’ve been given a caffeinated, street-art-leaning facelift.
Chalkys serves eggs, toast, fritters et al. for breakfast, and salads and pulled-pork tacos for lunch. There’s a large selection of sweet and savoury fridge fare for those on the run.
The Mulcocks use Dukes beans, courtesy of Perth’s Small Print coffee roasters, which run through a shiny La Marzocco machine. It sources luxury teas from the (very) local loose-leaf merchants, The Seventh Duchess.
The space is a regular haunt for nearby university students, office workers and beachgoers, so it’s a pretty bustling place to be at any hour of the day.
