It might take you a while to register what feels different about Puck Espresso. Then, it’ll dawn on you.

You can actually hear the person next to you. The deafening thwack of baristas knocking out their coffee grinds is blessedly absent. It’s thanks to a noiseless filter cleaner called the Pro-Fondi and just one of the many innovations that keep owner Garrett Walsh ahead of the game.

After launching a slew of businesses – including Fremantle’s Blink – Perth’s first micro coffee bar – and Pony ExpressO, a converted stable in West Perth – Garrett opened Puck in 2015. Set off a main highway in Bicton, he’s now drip-feeding the ‘burbs a blend of cutting-edge innovation and local flavour.

Case in point: the fair-trade Arabica coffee from local roasters Crema, which is extracted through the coffee machine called Lady Luck, spray-painted by Perth street artist, Destroy.

Refreshingly, Garrett is a staunch supporter of other local businesses. Puck houses the small business Rich Bakes, which turns out cakes and pastries to pair with your espresso. Garrett also has a beam across the shop that displays coffee cups from nearby rivals he supports, such as Nine Seeds and Ootong and Lincoln. How’s that for confidence in your own product?
