Perth does summer well and so does The Aviary.

The venue’s rooftop space, The Nest, buzzes with people in the warmer months looking to get a tan and a Tanqueray at one of the largest rooftops in the city. It’s a staple in the repertoire of young partygoers.

AstroTurf and brightly coloured furniture set a lively mood. There are cages strung around and leafy-green surroundings are matched with comfy day beds.

The Nest does classic pub-style food including chicken parmagiana; fish and chips; and a Black Angus steak sandwich. The beer list is predominantly Australian, with international sparklings and various national reds and whites. There’s cocktail pitchers too, ideal to share between two or four people.

Winter’s no issue. Head downstairs to the Bird Cage Restaurant and Lounge Bar, which produces dishes with a South East Asian spin inspired by executive chef Luke Firth’s travels in the region. This is the place for a more sophisticated night out.

Music-wise, various DJs play for the Aviary Rooftop Sessions from Friday to Sunday. The Bird Cage is more about live music and features jazz, blues and R’n’B in the lounge.
