O Brother

Blink and you’ll miss this 140-patron tavern. Located on busy Stirling Highway, opposite the railway line, the intimate bar sits alongside a row of modest shopfronts, including restaurant Nasi Lemak Korner. Co-owners and brothers David (an architect) and James (a physio) Weir also work on the busy strip.

The venue is designed so guests can circulate around the outside, with access down both sides of the building. The front bar is a colourful combination of pastel pink and blue, with black furniture and custom terrazzo tables by design and production studio Remington Matters. Outside, repurposed black balustrading from a 1950s home sits alongside concrete and a wooden fence.

The extensive cocktail list includes the classics: Mojito with passionfruit and watermelon, Espresso Martini, Dark and Stormy, and Aperol Spritz as well as house signatures such as the Solo Crossing cocktail, which is named after the annual Rottnest Channel Swim and includes a Zooper Dooper shaken into the cocktail.

There are also spirits by local producers such as West Winds, Giniversity, Avosh, Republic of Freo, Old Young’s and Running With Thieves, plus brews by Nowhereman Brewing Co, Otherside Brewing and Colonial Brewing Co.

Pair them with snacks from the Pantry menu including battered-flathead tacos with house-made pico de gallo and salsa verde; Fremantle salt-and-pepper octopus or Albany sardines served with a hefty bread loaf; fries with skin on; and a three-cheese board with washed-rind brie, Farmhouse Gold and Blackwood Blue by Cambray Cheese in Cundinup.

The bar also hosts a Sunday session, Pink Sun Sets, from 2pm each week, with drink specials and music playing late into the night.
