Market Grounds is a new-age pub located in King’s Square, itself part of the Perth City Link development. It’s owned by ARK Group, the same company that’s behind The Generous Squire, Durty Nelly’s, The Squire’s Fortune and The Duke.
The venue has several distinct dining and drinking spaces. At ground level there’s the main Market Bar and a restaurant that seats 75. Up above is an intimate setting on a landing with plush booths and couches. On the second level there’s a function and overflow space with its own bar and room for 200 patrons.
Designed by globally renowned firm Woods Bagot, the kitsch interior features pastel accents; wallpaper; brown leather lounges; and a mix of lime and blue rattan chairs tucked under deep wooden tables.
Outside, two alfresco areas span 220 square metres, bordered by lemon and apple trees and herbs such as parsley, basil, and rosemary. They’re a nod to the site’s market history. A mobile bar is rolled out on busier days.
The restaurant offers share-style plates such as dry-aged tomahawk rib-eye with fermented garlic cream. And smoked chicken with brown-buttered cauliflower. Each dish is categorised under its relevant vendor (baker, fish monger, butcher, etc.) – another reference to the site’s history. At the bar, there’s a large selection of woodfired pizzas and upscale takes on traditional pub fare.
There are 18 taps behind the bar. Go-to brews such as Gage Roads, Rodgers and Heineken take up 14; two are dedicated to cider; and another two serve cocktails. There’s also a wine list thoughtfully signposted to help you choose, and cocktails with a twist, such as an Aperol spritz with peach bitters and pink grapefruit.
