Heroes and Villains

Shannon Mizen started making beer in 2005, around the same time he got a mortgage. The part-belt-tightener, part-hobby eventually grew into his first brewery set-up in 2018 at Oakover Grounds in the Swan Valley. Mizen worked away on his small kit at nights and on weekends, around his full-time job, before leaving his 30-year career in sales in 2020 to open Heroes and Villains in a quiet backstreet of semi-industrial Osborne Park.

The laid-back industrial setup, designed by Mizen and his wife Sally, is true to those humble DIY beginnings. You can sample one of its 12 beers at wooden trestle tables surrounded by the very vats where they’re made. The offering here is separated into two categories, six Heroes and six Villains, which range from familiar to more experimental tilts. On the Heroes side, you’ll find crowd favourites such as a tropical hazy pale ale, citrus IPA and a Euro lager, while the Villains rotate regularly and include single keg taproom-only releases. You might find a lemonade Gose, triple IPA, whole cone IPA and a triple dry-hopped oat cream IPA.

Mizen and head brewer Rahne Maxwell are behind the beers and are never far away. Both will talk you through the range and share their knowledge about WA’s dynamic brewing scene.
