Originally, one of Clarences’ owners wanted the bar to be unnamed, like the small neighbourhood bars of Italy. But since that wasn’t an option here, the owners decided to name the small bar after the side street it sits on.

The interior features wood, leather and brick adorned with artwork from a variety of Australian artists. The venue is split into three spaces: the back courtyard, bar and dining. The food menu reflects this division, running from sandwiches and smallgoods all the way up to main meals.

Co-owner Lloyd Smith devises the highly original cocktails and manages the wine list. His Thai-inspired vodka cocktail, The Overcast, beat out entrants across the nation in a Stolichnaya-sponsored competition in 2012.

He brings a similar flair to the wine list, allowing it to hold its own despite Must Winebar being just down the road. The house drops are made in collaboration with Bella Ridge Winery. Likewise the Home Away From Home wines, which Smith travelled to Spain to produce with Azul y Garanza. Elsewhere there’s a strong focus on natural and biodynamic vineyards.

There are close to 20 beers and the same number of ciders on offer. In good news for those with a taste for the bitter, the bar also serves Fernet Branca and cola on tap.
