Pull up a chair and take a seat. Now, this isn’t just any chair; it’s a light-pink work of art by Fritz Hansen called the Ro Chair. It sits in the window of Mobilia’s new Claremont showroom, a place where honest design is valued and respected, not only with regards to the furniture, but also the building and its pressed-tin ceiling, jarrah floors and abundance of natural light.
“We were committed to maintaining the integrity of the building and the history, so we engaged Michael Patroni and Dimmity Walker from Space Agency who executed our vision perfectly,” says co-owner Mirella Scaramella.
Having spent six years in its previous location (also on Stirling Highway), Mirella and fellow co-owner Salvatore Fazzari felt it was time for the company and its global brands to expand to a bigger space.
Scaramella has noticed more people are interested in design these days. “Fashion, food culture and appreciation for arts have long been understood and appreciated here in Perth,” she says. “So it is exciting to see that the design scene is now finally starting to raise its head and gain momentum also.”
The showroom is a series of open-planned spaces that house everything from pendant lighting to salt and pepper shakers. The store carries pieces from revered design brands such as Kettal, Foscarini and Fritz Hansen. Mobilia is also the first in Australia to display work from Areti Lighting, a French company that hand makes all of its pieces.
The showroom has an attached cafe that will open in early December with a range of lower-priced homewares.
