Open House Perth is back this November. Among this year’s record 104 destinations is an exciting debut: the Madaschi Residence by the city’s most famous architect, Iwan Iwanoff.

Born in Bulgaria in 1919, Iwanoff had a style that was revolutionary for the 1960s and ’70s. By the time of his death in 1986, his distinctive homes had garnered a cult following that endures today. The Madaschi Residence exemplifies his aesthetic.

Built in 1970, the Brutalist-style home in Dianella features many of Iwanoff’s signatures such as concrete blockwork, innovative floor plans, futuristic facades and handcrafted panels made from recycled materials.

The home’s sunken lounge is direct from the Mad Men era, flanked by a Carrara marble, room-dividing TV unit and high walnut-timber ceilings. An indoor atrium, pond and water feature were novel inclusions at the time of design. A wraparound balcony in the backyard acts as both a vantage point for the pool and the neighbourhood, and a striking feature of its own.

Despite some interior cosmetic updates, the residence’s original character has been carefully retained and will transport visitors back in time.

The Madaschi Residence is one of 35 new destinations at this year’s Open House Perth. Others include the new Channel 9 studios, Subiaco Oval and Northbridge Brewing Co. More than 50,000 people are expected to partake in the weekend, which will open up rooftops, heritage buildings, skyscrapers and private residences all over the city.

Creative director Carly Barrett says Open House Perth has facilitated more than 200,000 visits since it launched in 2011.

“Every year the event presents new challenges and opportunities,” she says. “Whether you like a particular building style doesn’t matter because good design is something that transcends time and style. You can feel like a tourist in your own hometown, be inspired for future projects or appreciate the wealth of local design talent WA has to offer.”

The Madaschi Residence at 53 Shannon Road, Dianella is open on Sunday November 12 from 10am to 5pm.
