This September, 151 artists are bringing creative flair to Margs, exhibiting everything from glassblowing and metalwork to multimedia works and painting.

Open Studios returns to Margaret River this spring for one of its biggest celebrations yet. This year, 151 artists – including 23 emerging artists making their festival debut – will open their doors.

Normally tucked away in private workspaces, these artists are inviting visitors to step inside their creative worlds. Painter and illustrator Fi Wilkie says the artists relish the chance to connect. “We are really excited to have the opportunity to talk to people in our own space,” she tells Broadsheet.

Now in its 12th year, the event has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated annual celebrations. Over 15 days, studios from Busselton to Augusta will open their doors. Visit Leon Pericles’s home and garden with its Tetris-like terracotta walls and tiles and cosy colourful corner, explore Harry Wykman ’s rustic pottery studio in an old shearing shed, and stroll through the sculpture walk at Kerry Sibly’s studio.

Glassblower Gerry Reilly has been participating in Open Studios from the beginning. He sees it as a great opportunity for new artists to find their audience and for established artists to deepen their connection with buyers. “We can only make our artwork because of the people who collect it,” says Reilly.

The program isn’t just about studio visits. There’s an art party on Saturday September 13 at Clairault Streicker Wines to kick off the five-day fest. There will be music, mingling and a silent incognito art auction.

Renowned photographer Christian Fletcher will once again host his exhibition Art Is, a special collaboration that invites local artists to reimagine Fletcher’s photographs.

While you’re in the region, you can also explore the street art stories by embarking on one of the Margaret River Art Trails, which wind past murals, graffiti and public art.

With nearly 100 kilometres separating the northernmost and southernmost studios, planning is key. There’s an online tool to help plan your route and navigate the event.

The Margaret River Open Studios runs from September 13 to September 28. The full program is available online.
