Barrel & Larder School runs out of Ross Hill Wines and teaches people not only how to make great food but how to pair it with the wonderful cool-climate wines coming out of Orange.

It’s a group experience for up to 12 people and while it does cater well for corporate clients it’s quickly become known as a fun alternative to run-of-the-mill bridal shower activities. Because it’s more a demonstration than a hands-on cooking experience, novices need not be afraid. You can sit back and enjoy the wines all while learning some handy tips to take home with you.

The experience fully caters to all needs and is entirely customisable. The menu takes inspiration from the local farmers or growers your group wants to learn about. From venison farmers to the area’s top chefs, it’s an intimate affair – the meals are prepped right in front of you or at your table.

The property is also home to Ross Hill Wines (the only certified carbon-neutral winery in Australia), so when you’re ready to do some more wine tastings you can take a couple steps over there and do so. They, like most Orange wineries, specialise in cool-climate varietals such as chardonnay and shiraz. Education is important to everyone involved, so jump into a winery tour there, taste some of the ferments and absorb all that head wine maker Scott Burke has to offer.
