Across 27 years in the brewing game, Matso’s has blazed a trail through the Australian alcoholic ginger beer scene – and now they’re pouring beer, firing pizzas and hosting live music events in a new sunny spot just south of Noosa.

Pioneering alcoholic ginger beer brand Matso’s has cultivated a rich history in WA since its inception in 1997 – and now the brewing company has expanded to the Sunshine Coast. It may seem like a slightly arbitrary move, but Eumundi – a town with an arty and somewhat alternative vibe – has certain similarities to Matso’s home town of Broome.

“The hinterland of the Sunshine Coast is the most prolific ginger growing region in Australia, with a similar climate to Broome. Matso’s is a slightly left-of-centre brand, which is largely driven by our roots in Broome, so the opening of our second home in an equally quirky location such as Eumundi is fitting,” a spokesperson from Matso’s told Broadsheet

The company has taken over the space that previously housed live music venue Joe’s Waterhole. It has a true indoor-outdoor feel, with peaked corrugated iron roofs and long family-style tables. The front bar has kept the traditional country pub feel – and the name Joe’s Front Bar – and there are live acoustic sets every weekend. All of this is backdropped by a quintessential Queensland backyard and patio space, strung with string lights and dotted with orange and white umbrellas.

Ginger beer, fruity beers and classic ales all flow from behind the bar, while Mai Tais are also on tap. From the food menu, you can expect small plates including lobster rolls, kingfish sashimi with melon, and a barramundi burger. Bigger options come in the form of steak with jus, ginger beer-glazed pork ribs and various woodfired pizzas.

“We want everyone to feel the Matso’s vibe – where good times, great drinks and a bit of eccentricity collide. We want this venue to be more than a brewery and distillery – we want it to be a hub for social connection and collaboration within the local community.”
