You’ll find Gochu – the “new Korean” eatery by David Lee (who’s also behind Camper Coffee, Good Dog Bad Dog and Poni in Commercial Bay, Newmarket’s Candy Shop and Aigo noodle bar on Ponsonby Road) – tucked away on a corner of the Commercial Bay shopping precinct’s second floor. Its huge wrap-around windows give you a view out over the water, the ferry building and the square below.
The flavours are big and the dishes are playful. The spicy pork and kimchi milk buns are a sell-out signature, served with beurre blanc that you pour over yourself. You might also order gochujang charred octopus; cold noodles with white kimchi; charred chicken with gochujang, comte cheese and leek sauce; or cured kingfish with apple and anchovy consomme. Opt for a set menu and you’ll be served a breadth of Gochu’s genre-hopping flavours.
Drinks-wise, there’s a focus on boutique gin brands from around the world served with high-end tonic, and the wine list revolves around low-intervention and organic producers. Cocktails include the XXX Gummy Bear, which mixes Hayman's sloe gin with lychee liqueur, damson plum liqueur and lemon.
