New Location: After the Floods, Cassia Has Found a New Address in Central Auckland City

Since opening in July 2014, Cassia in Auckland’s Fort Lane has been consistently busy – hardly surprising, given it’s from hospitality power couple Sid and Chand Sahrawat. But after the accolades came Covid, then two devastating floods nine months apart, leaving the pair to literally pick up the pieces of the restaurant’s future.
Meanwhile, uptown, Skycity was considering what could replace The Grill at its hotel on Federal Street. The two quandaries collided to create a beautiful solution – and a new partnership was born.
Last Friday, just two months after the contract was signed, Cassia opened its doors at the entrance to the Grand by Skycity. The space is elegant but not at the cost of comfort. Set across two levels, it’s a soothing mix of dark grey, warm wooden tones and golden-hued lighting, brought to life by the plush turquoise of beautiful banquettes. It’s easy to imagine cosying up with some hearty, spice-laden Indian dishes as the temperatures drop outside.
Cassia’s menu is largely the same as before – with a few additions to celebrate new beginnings. “We added the tandoori taco because it’s so nostalgic for us,” says Sid. “It’s inspired by the kati rolls we ate growing up – it’s light and clean, a contrast to some of our richer dishes.” There’s also a new beef short rib with vindaloo.
Round off the meal with a dessert of chocolate, coffee and miso, which involves some satisfying breaking action with your spoon. The smooth chocolate shell gives way to a decadent interior that takes on and showcases various forms. Much like the restaurant itself.
