For those with little fingers, reaching into their parents’ jewellery box, drawer, (or, perhaps, pile on the dresser) can be a moment of awe. Modern jewellery brand Bon creates small-sized pieces for children that are as precious as their wearers.
Born from a conversation between two mothers and friends, jewellery designer Jasmin Scott (of Jasmin Sparrow and creative collaborator Lucy Pilkington, Bon balances sophistication with sweetness. The label’s charm bracelets and necklaces are made in Aotearoa New Zealand, using recycled sterling silver or nine-carat gold. Customers can choose their bracelet size and finish, which can be added to over time with a range of ethically sourced gemstones, pearls and solid charms. Bon also offers the option of each charm being worn as a single pendant on a delicate chain.
“My goddaughter lives overseas and I have sent her a charm for her birthday every year since she was born,” says Pilkington. “She may not have spent a lot of time with me in person, but I know that the charms she receives each year help her feel connected to me. We often speak about why I chose each one and what they now mean to her.”
The sculptural charms are designed to become signifiers for childhood memories, milestones and other special moments. The hope is that their significance in this way continues as they are passed from generation to generation.
“The most important milestones in life are traditionally marked by gifts of jewellery, and as someone who has been on the receiving end of such a gift – it was a tradition each birthday to
go with my grandmother to the jewellery store to select a charm – I cherish both the nostalgia and the significance of such memories,” says Scott. “The ballet slippers, a ballerina, a seashell, a bow, a fan, a kitten, a flower – they all take me back to moments of innocent and inquisitive joy.”
During the month of May, Bon is offering customers 30 per cent off when they sign up for its e-newsletter.
