Comfort food means different things to different people – but for Auckland-based chef Nick Landsman, it’s generously filled and toasted sandwiches, made-from-scratch pies and nostalgic sweet treats. This is the offering at Gloria’s, the daytime spot that he and partner Emma Ogilvie opened in August 2022 in the space of their former wine shop, Star Wines.

Just down the road from the pair’s Bar Celeste, Gloria’s is a light and bright space with chequerboard floors and bright orange accents. There’s limited seating, but the intention is for it to be grab-and-go.

If it’s on offer, order the deli meat sandwich – herby schiacciata filled with mortadella and a couple of salamis. There might be a salt beef Reuben or a roast beef sandwich with tartare sauce and peppery rocket. Vegetarian and vegan options could be tahini-based, with roast vegetables such as pumpkin, and salsa verde or zhoug.

A range of toasted sandwiches includes a croque forestier (with mushrooms) and croque monsieur. Landsman is baking hot pies from scratch – without shortcuts such as corn starch or gelatine – and there are nostalgic sweet treats.

Drinks-wise, there’s a full set-up from Coffee Supreme and a fridge filled with Almighty sparkling waters plus juices, iced teas and house-made lemonade.
