An upcoming digital art experience promises to bring many of the most famous paintings in the world to life right in front of your eyes.

Opening at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on January 4, 2023, Renaissance: The Age of Genius is a multi-media exhibition that features around 500 artworks from masters including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Sandro Botticelli and Caravaggio.

It was originally created by Ukrainian digital media studio Front Pictures, which has crafted many impressive digital displays for shows and performances around the world.

You’ll watch as The Birth of Venus, the Mona Lisa, Sistine Chapel frescoes and more are projected onto the walls of a large purpose-built space in Aotea Centre with specialist multimedia equipment, wrapping roughly 270 degrees around you.

In a 40-minute sequence, deftly crafted video content is combined with still imagery, so the contraptions in Da Vinci’s sketches seem to take off, blossoms rain around Botticelli’s Madonna and the snakes writhe on Caravaggio’s Medusa.

As the exhibition moves through works from artist to artist, there will be biographical information about each of them on a panel in the room’s centre, coordinating with the works being projected.

It’s being brought to New Zealand by The Stetson Group, and co-founder Stewart Macpherson says he’s delighted about the show, which the team has worked on producing since January this year.

It’s a unique multimedia exhibition that, until now, has not been seen in the Southern Hemisphere, Macpherson told Broadsheet. “With images twice the height of a human, it is truly immersive and wondrous!”
