What you’ll win

If you’re our lucky winner, you and a friend will fly to the vibrant city of Christchurch – the gateway to the beautiful Canterbury region, full of dramatic vistas and a bustling dining scene – on Thursday August 24, 2023. You’ll pick up a hire car – yours for the duration of the trip – via Hertz, and then enjoy an indulgent six-course dinner at Central City fine-dining destination Inati, co-founded by one-time Gordon Ramsay collaborator Simon Levy. That night, you’ll stay in a deluxe room at the Observatory Hotel, centrally located in repurposed heritage buildings right across the road from the botanic gardens. True to its name, it was previously the site of the University of Canterbury’s observatory.

On the second day, you’ll explore Christchurch’s rich cultural history at a leisurely pace with Āmiki Cultural Food Tours’ City Morning Meander, where you’ll taste local creations and learn about traditional Māori sites and stories. Then it’s off to lunch at Tussock Hill Vineyard, a family-owned boutique vineyard where seasonal share plates and organic wine shine against a wraparound view of the surrounding parklands. From there you’ll drive two hours to Methven – a bucolic town devoted to snow sports – and stay the night at Brinkley Resort, in close proximity to Methven’s swathe of pubs and restaurants.

Day three is all about skiing and snowboarding at Mt Hutt, with a full day of winter activities culminating in a refreshing 5.30pm sunset session at the postcard-perfect Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa, just two minutes’ drive from Brinkley Resort. The next morning you’ll check out and head off to the historical village of Akaroa, where you’ll embark on a dolphin cruise. It’s a scenic two-hour experience that takes place in a dormant volcanic crater, with frequent sightings of Hector’s dolphins – the smallest (and rarest) dolphins in the world.

After the tour, you’ll drive about half an hour north to arrive at Annandale, a luxury farm retreat where you’ll enjoy the secluded hilltop Shepherd’s Cottage, offering up views of the ocean and the Kaikōura Ranges alike. You’ll be escorted there via 4WD across clifftop farm tracks, with an open fire and outside bathtub greeting you back at the property, which for generations was used exclusively by local shepherds. A produce basket and fresh food platter will also await you, along with a bottle of champagne, for a cosy self-catered dinner and breakfast. If you’re keen to explore the rugged surrounds, mountain bikes are also available by request.

Don’t worry if you don’t take the two-wheel exploration option, because day five starts with a guided tour of the farm, complete with a visit to the historic woolshed. You’ll remain on the property that day and night, with an hour-long luxury massage offered right there in your cottage. The treatment is even tailored to you specifically, following consultation with the therapist. In the morning, on Tuesday August 29, you’ll head back to Christchurch before departing for home with amazing memories fresh in your mind.
