Picturesque landscapes, dreamy vineyards and mild temperatures make the Adelaide Hills one of Australia’s best destinations for a winter weekend getaway. It’s long been known as a world-class cool-climate wine region, but it’s also a top culinary destination – and it’s only a half an hour drive from Adelaide’s CBD

We’re giving two lucky Broadsheet Access members the chance to experience the beauty of the Hills in winter, with accommodation, activities and return flights from your nearest capital city covered.

The lucky winner and a friend will spend two nights at the serene Sequoia Lodge, a private sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills highlands. Get some R and R in a sustainably designed suite with a deluxe king-size bed, snack from a fully stocked minibar, read a book by the fire in the lounge. and soak up 180-degree treetop views from your private balcony. Each morning, you’ll be treated to breakfast on the balcony or in the lounge as you watch the mist rise over the lush Piccadilly Valley.

Personalised activities curated by your host are included in your stay. Start with a dip at one of three thermal pools, or the heated infinity pool, before hitting the road for a few wine tastings. You can find innovative sparkling at Tapanappa, floral grenache at Yangarra and vintage Grange at Penfolds – all around a half-hour drive from the property.

Back at the lodge you’ll also experience a South Australian cheese and wine masterclass featuring some of the region’s top producers, as well as a cellar wine tour. If you’re more of a nature lover, take a guided walk through the state forest to the pinnacle of Mount Lofty. At night, you’ll have the opportunity to gaze at the stars through the lodge’s private telescope.

There’s also a runner-up retreat up for grabs: a weekend for two at Mount Lofty House, just around the corner from Sequoia Lodge. The traditional manor was recently named among the best small hotels in the world at Trip Advisor’s 2023 Best of the Best awards. Settle into your suite and snack on freshly baked cookies before roaming the property’s lawns, vineyard, day spa and cognac lounge.

Your stay includes a daily breakfast, a wine masterclass hosted by a local sommelier, and a historic tour of the manor in the evening. You can also opt for a dining experience at the award-winning Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant or Sunday roast at Martha Hardy’s Kitchen. After your meal, perch by a fireplace or the outdoor firepit with a glass of mulled wine or world-renowned Adelaide Hills pinot as you look out across the valley.
