A Wave-Shaped W Hotel Is Opening in Sydney in 2023, Complete With Rooftop Bar and Infinity Pool

If you’ve driven across the flyover roads that skim Darling Harbour and Sydney’s CBD, you would have seen the W Hotel rising between the narrow overpasses. Now, after many delays and a previously anticipated opening of 2020, the international hotel group behind the striking asymmetrical development has today announced the luxury hotel will finally open in October 2023.
The wave-like building, which has taken over the space once occupied by Sydney’s IMAX theatre, will have 585 luxury rooms and suites, views of the harbour, a two-storey rooftop bar, a heated infinity pool, restaurant, spa and the usual hotel facilities such as a gym and event spaces. One side of the building will look out over the water, while the other side will face Chinatown and Sydney’s downtown. The hotel will give guests easy access to the International Convention Centre and Darling Square.
The interiors have been conceived and created by London-based interior specialists Bowler James Brindley, which is behind a number of international hotels, and will echo the curvy exterior of the building. The hotel’s colour palette is inspired by the marine environment – think azure bathrooms and walk-in robes with contrasting colours and inflorescence.
“We are incredibly excited to confirm our opening date for W Sydney in October 2023. There have been delays, but trust me, it will be worth the wait,” the general manager of W Sydney said in a statement.
This is not the first W Hotel in Sydney. The original W Sydney in Woolloomooloo was converted into the Blue Hotel under Taj Hotels and Resorts in 2007 and, more recently, rebranded as Ovolo Woolloomooloo.
