Some people travel to slow down. Others travel to feel more alive. In New Zealand, dramatic landscapes don’t just set the scene – they become part of the adventure.

Whether you’re carving untouched powder, freefalling above golden coastlines or squeezing through ancient cave systems, every experience offers a different way to challenge yourself. Start with these unforgettable adventures, then discover the ones that leave you feeling most alive – and find your own version of New Zealand.

Chase fresh tracks beyond the ordinary

New Zealand’s ski fields are impressive. But with terrain like this, it would be a shame to stick to the resort runs. For the ultimate alpine adventure, head into the backcountry, where untouched powder and wide-open slopes await, accessible only by helicopter.

A guided heli-skiing experience unlocks some of the South Island’s most remote terrain, with access to more than 250 runs across pristine mountain ranges. Most tours include around five runs tailored to a range of skiing and snowboarding abilities, offering the chance to carve fresh tracks through deep powder that’s impossible to find on groomed resort slopes.

Taking off from a remote sheep station two hours’ drive from Christchurch, you’ll soar over the dramatic peaks and alpine passes before touching down in an otherwise inaccessible wilderness. From there it’s just you, the snow and panoramic mountain views as you make your descent.

Take the leap you’ve been thinking about

If you want to get up high but would prefer to be firmly attached to something, maybe a giant rope swing is more your speed. The Taupō Swing at AJ Hackett Bungy offers just that. Stepping into a harness, you’ll swing from the clifftops and reach speeds of up to 70kph, going feet-first over the rushing water of the Waikato River below.

You can take the plunge solo or alongside a friend, and with the swing located just five minutes’ drive from central Taupō, it’s one of the easiest ways to inject a little adrenaline into your itinerary. If skydiving or heli-skiing feels like too much too soon, this is the perfect gateway thrill before working your way up to even bigger adventures.

Discover adventure beneath the surface

You don’t actually have to climb, fly or fall to get your heart racing, at least not in New Zealand. Some of the country’s most memorable adventures happen underground. At Ruakuri Cave, you’ll follow an expert guide through a vast limestone cave system, where rushing water, ancient rock formations and thousands of glow-worms create a world unlike anything above ground.

Part thrill ride through rapids and waterfalls, part cultural lesson on the most magical lazy river on earth, this three-hour experience is a great mix of rush and rest. Once your pulse has been properly raised on your way underground, settle into a more relaxed rafting adventure, bobbing through a river-carved limestone cave under a ceiling of glow-worms, and learn about the science and culture attached to the caves before stopping for an underground snack.

Earn your way to the top

We’ve covered falling, jumping and swimming, but how about climbing? New Zealand can give you something better than your local bouldering gym. Head to Fox Glacier and you can step into the shoes of an ice climber and join a guide to ascend the icy walls and slopes of the glacier under your own steam – and ice-axes.

The experience is entirely customisable, making it suitable for climbers of different skill levels, from novices to seasoned experts. Gear is included too, so you’ll be set up with climbing boots, crampons and ice-axes, before taking a route up the ice – anything from a challenging ascension to a relaxed scramble is available, depending on your preference.

The adventure begins and ends with a scenic helicopter flight, delivering you to this remote alpine landscape before whisking you back after your climb. A bird’s-eye view of the glacier provides the perfect bookend to an unforgettable day.

See the country from a whole new perspective

Generally speaking, the higher you go, the better the view. But for the very best panoramas, you’ll need to leave solid ground behind. Think cruising altitude. If jumping out of a plane is your idea of the ultimate adrenaline rush, you might as well do it somewhere spectacular. From five kilometres above the ground, the turquoise bays, golden beaches and native forest of Abel Tasman National Park unfold in breathtaking detail, making it one of New Zealand’s most unforgettable places to take the leap.

After about a 20-minute flight to altitude, you and your tandem instructor will jump out of the plane and begin a freefall of up to 70 seconds above the coast. Once the initial rush settles and your heartbeat returns to something resembling normal, you’ll have plenty of time to marvel at the verdant forest, rolling farmland and bright blue sea below, gracefully parachuting back down to solid ground.
