The first St. Regis hotel opened more than 100 years ago in New York City. Known for elegant, sophisticated interiors and top-notch service, today the brand has over 40 hotels all over the world, including in Italy, Egypt, Japan, the Maldives and Mauritius.

On Wednesday it was announced the newest addition to the portfolio – and the first Australian outpost – will be St. Regis Melbourne.

The new hotel will be on the corner of Spencer and Flinders streets within the $800 million Flinders Bank precinct. The precinct, which will be made up of three towers that will also house apartments, is by Fender Katsalidis Architects and is due to be completed in 2022.

The St. Regis will take up levels two to 11 in the tallest, 33-level tower. The two other towers will be 26 levels.

More than 160 rooms will be lavishly fitted out by design studio Chada, offering breathtaking views of the Melbourne CBD and the Yarra River.

The hotel will offer a butler service tailored to each guest. There’s also a Melbourne-specific Bloody Mary in the works (Fernand Petiot, a barman at the St. Regis New York, claimed to have invented the drink in 1921).

There’ll also be a wellness centre with a 25-metre heated indoor pool, a fitness centre, spa and beauty salon.

There are plans for a “specialty restaurant” too, but details are yet to be announced.
