Marking the latest addition to a swag of high-end international hotels to arrive in Sydney, Capella Hotels & Resorts has swung open its doors for the first time.
Housed in the Edwardian Department of Education building in Sydney’s heritage Sandstone Precinct, the 192-room luxury hotel features standalone tubs and French linen in all of its walnut-and natural stone-trimmed guest rooms and suites.
Cappella has six high-end hotels and resorts in Asia. Its properties in Bangkok, Shanghai, Ubud, Hanoi, Hanain and Singapore are known for their architecture and design, carefully considered dining offerings and deluxe day spas. Once Sydney has opened, new resorts are slated for Kyoto, Riyadh and the Maldives by 2025.

The ground floor features three restaurants with bars, open to hotel guests and the public. Flagship diner Brasserie 1930 is the latest from Brent Savage and Nick Hildebrandt, the veteran restaurateurs behind Sydney institutions Bentley and Monopole, who are putting a modern-Australian spin on classic brasserie dishes.
“The heritage dining room is one of the most beautiful we’ve seen, and our intention is to create a Sydney institution,” Savage said in a statement when the restaurant was announced back in November 2022.
In-house guests can enjoy treatments at Auriga Spa or swim in the 20-metre heated indoor pool, before heading down to private ground-floor retreat the Living Room – which also hosts the hotel’s culture and experience programs. These include a two-hour walking tour from the hotel to through the laneways of The Rocks, with fascinating and sometimes grim stories about the history of the education building and the Sandstone Precinct.
To mark the opening, Capella Sydney is offering this experience and more as part of the Capella History Journey – which includes an overnight stay for two in a deluxe guestroom, breakfast at Brasserie 1930, valet parking and 24-hour access to the hotel’s fitness centre – priced at AUD $1500 until June 30, 2023.
Capella Sydney is now open at 35–39 Bridge Street, Sydney.
