Tiny cabins have been popping up around South Australia, promising privacy, cosy quarters, a rustic atmosphere and back-to-basics living. But this new arrival offers a more spacious, luxurious (and expensive) alternative.

Esca is a secluded new accommodation option for premium retreats nestled among stunning scenery. Its first location, in Inman Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula, launched in April.

There are two near-identical suites sharing a sprawling 80-hectare property, spaced 100 metres apart. Each comes with an al fresco dining area and stone outdoor terrace (plus a sunken bath and fire pit) overlooking hills and countryside all the way to the Southern Ocean.

And while some cabins are cramped to fit their amenities, these suites are large and roomy, with plenty of space for the king-sized bed, custom Jam Factory furniture, wood-burning fireplace, smart TV, kitchen, dining area and lounge. There’s even a large stone bath – positioned by the double-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Fleurieu – and separate shower.

The buildings run on off-grid power, water and sewerage. Because they’re built off-site and transported to the property, there’s less environmental impact and wastage, says Esca’s founders. “These aren’t pods in paddocks – you can’t just press these off an assembly line,” says CEO Steve Kernaghan. “This is high-quality design and architecture in a place you’d never expect to find it.”

Esca’s suites are specially designed to suit the natural landscape around it, meaning the offering, fit-out and inclusions in other regions will be different, too. There are plans to launch sites in Clare Valley and elsewhere within the Fleurieu, as well as around regional Australia.

Prices start at $599 per night with a two-night minimum. Book here.
