The Best Things To Do in Tasmania for the Whole Family This Off Season

Tasmania in the Off Season is a playground for all ages, an ideal destination for a winter getaway or a longer stay. It’s a chance to get outside, stay up late stargazing, explore Tasmania’s convict history, and even get the family in the snow.

From Tassie devils to river cruises, here are some of our favourite ways to spend a family holiday in Tasmania.

Gordon River Cruises: kids cruise free

Travelling with kids isn’t always synonymous with peace and quiet, but Gordon River Cruises comes close. Their “whisper mode” vessel keeps things calm on the water – and this Off Season, kids cruise free.

The six-hour journey takes in the wild scenery and layered history of Tasmania’s west coast. Departing from Strahan, Spirit of the Wild passes through the notorious Hells Gates, where the harbour meets the Southern Ocean, before gliding into the still waters of the Gordon River. An early departure gives the best chance of seeing the famous mirror-like reflections.

There are stops along the way to stretch your legs and explore. At Heritage Landing, walk through World Heritage-listed rainforest and spot native species, including ancient Huon pines. Then it’s on to Sarah Island, once a brutal convict settlement known as “hell on earth”, where guides bring its history to life through storytelling and character-led interpretation.

A chef-prepared buffet lunch is included, rounding out a full day that keeps both kids and adults entertained.

East Coast Natureworld: devils in the dark

A short drive from Bicheno, East Coast Natureworld’s after-hours experience, Devils in the Dark, returns this Off Season.

From a covered, all-weather viewing area, you’ll watch Tasmanian devils feeding at close range, with very little separating you and Australia’s largest carnivorous marsupial. Expert guides provide commentary throughout, while adults can enjoy Tasmanian wine and cheese at children’s rates.

Due to the nature of this experience, it’s recommended for kids aged six and up.

Wesley Dale: a stellar, starlit family night

Set on a working sheep property in northern Tasmania, Wesley Dale offers a night in that feels like a real adventure. Surrounded by mountain views, established parklands and productive gardens, the 1870s Coach House sleeps up to 14 people, making it ideal for extended families or group getaways.

On arrival, settle in by the two wood fires with a hamper of hand-picked local goodies. Kids can take over the enormous bunk room – more camp-in than bedroom – while you spend the day exploring the property, meeting the animals and checking out what’s growing in the veggie garden.

Cosy evenings are what this place is built for. There’s a games basket, plenty of firewood and a hot chocolate kit made with locally sourced milk, plus marshmallows for toasting. After dark, head outside and look up. A stargazing kit is provided, complete with a thermos, keep cups, torches and a simple star guide.

When it’s time to turn in, adults can retreat to two main bedrooms or the queen loft.

Crowne Plaza Hobart: neon nightfall stay and tour

With Crowne Plaza’s Neon Nightfall package, you’re in the middle of the city, but the experience takes you somewhere entirely different once night falls. Your stay centres on a two-hour evening Glow Tour led by biologist Dr Lisa Gershwin, heading out after dark to spot Tasmania’s bioluminescent wildlife under UV light. Expect glowing fungi, invertebrates and nocturnal animals in their natural habitat.

Back at the hotel, the theme continues with glow-inspired chocolates, a buffet breakfast for two and a relaxed midday checkout. The package is available from May through August, with select blackout dates. Children under 12 can stay using existing bedding for a surcharge.

The Whimsy: fossick for a wild Tassie sapphire

Reached via a short drive through rainforest, The Whimsy is a restored miner’s cottage made for slowing down. Close to the Blue Tier and Derby mountain bike network, it suits birdwatchers, fungi fans, waterfall chasers, stargazers and anyone looking to unwind. With accommodation for up to six guests across three bedrooms, it’s easy to settle in by the wood fires or head outside for stargazing by the firepit.

The region has a rich gemstone history, and a midweek Off Season stay can be paired with a session led by local gem hunter and jeweller Des Grey to learn the basics of fossicking in nearby creeks and rivers. You’ll get a hands-on demonstration, along with tips on where to try your luck. Keep an eye out for the region’s sought-after sapphires.

Guests can also select a stone and collaborate on a custom piece of jewellery, designed and crafted locally.

Ben Lomond Base: family snow play and fireside treats

Just 30 minutes from Launceston, Ben Lomond Base is the starting point for a classic day in the snow. The family snow play day and fireside treats package is designed for all experience levels, with all the gear provided so you can head straight into it.

Tobogganing, snowball fights and snowman-building are all on offer, with boots, pants, jackets and helmets included for the whole family. Snow chains are also available to make access up the mountain straightforward.

When you’re done outside, head back to the Base to warm up by the fire with hot chocolates, mulled wine and s’mores.

Sled Dog Adventures Tasmania: ride on the wild side

Tasmania is full of surprises, including the chance to ride with a team of Siberian huskies through narrow forest trails. Just an hour south of Hobart, Sled Dog Adventures Tasmania runs dryland tours with energetic dogs throughout the cooler months.

The Forest Adventure Tour covers around four kilometres, weaving through bush tracks at a pace set by the huskies, who are in their element in winter. There are options to suit different levels of adventure, with children aged two and up welcome.

Each session also includes time to meet the dogs and learn more about how they’re trained and cared for. It’s the kind of day out that gives kids plenty to talk about afterwards.
