Talk to pretty much anyone these days and you’ll get a breakdown of the litany of holidays – both international and domestic – they’ve needed to reschedule, cancel or put on ice due to border closures, snap lockdowns or suspicious coughs. And with many popular Aussie destinations booking out months in advance (or upping prices to cater to demand), it’s harder to avoid pandemic-related postponements by waiting till the last minute to book.

Enter Luxury Escapes’ new last-minute deals portal, which makes it easy (and not too expensive) to organise a holiday on the fly. Each week it releases a bunch of new holidays – whether that’s a long weekend, city staycation or week-long holiday – to be taken over the following seven days. You could even book today for a stay tonight. Another bonus? If you book through Luxury Escapes, you’ll get extra goodies such as late checkout, a bottle of wine on arrival, room upgrades or daily breakfast.

“Customers are definitely thinking more short-term when it comes to booking their holidays,” Mark Ehlers, Last Minute Escapes’ partnership manager tells Broadsheet. “Pre-Covid, customers would book many months out from their trip; however, given the ever-changing nature of the Covid-normal world, customers are increasingly prioritising flexibility and planning their holidays with less lead time, as this can often be more reliable than planning a holiday months out.”

Deals at the moment include a stay at Canberra’s boutique Little National Hotel from $161 per night, with $30 food and drink credit per day; a break at Melbourne’s Prince Hotel, from $170 a night with a room upgrade, daily breakfast and a late checkout; and a stay at Sydney’s chic new Little National, with a glass of Moët champagne and grazing platter on arrival, 12pm check-in and late checkout.

“We’re not here to just find a bed in a room,” says Ehlers. “We look for properties that have great food, beverages and the kind of on-site experiences that highlight the surrounding location. We want all travellers to feel like they’re far away from everyday life, even if it is just for a one-night staycation.”

Each deal lasts for just seven days from Wednesdays, so if you don’t find a holiday you’re keen on, you can check back the following week for a whole new batch.
