The internet is a weird but wonderful place. A few weeks ago it was Brat, last week it was demure, and now it’s cucumber salad.
It’s Logan Moffitt and his Tiktok series we have to thank for this. Once a flippant “f*ck it” addition to a side salad, cucumber is no longer on the sidelines due to Moffitt’s focus on the ingredient.
And people are vibing with it. The first video of the cucumber salad recipe series spotlighted a mix of soy sauce, sugar, spring onions, fish sauce, MSG and sesame seeds, shaken through a whole sliced cucumber, and generated 12 million views.
Each cucumber recipe posted since has managed to crack at least one million views and his top performer – featuring a salmon-avocado bagel dressing – currently sits at over 31 million.
But alongside Logan’s ability to bring the shock factor and innovate with new flavour profiles, it’s clear that he finds success with consistency. The goal? Thin-cut cucumber. The accomplice? A mandolin slicer.
Mandolins are the quick and easy answer to efficient meal prep. But I don’t have to tell you that – if you’ve watched Moffitt’s videos, you already know the deal. It’s just that finding the right one is key, especially when it’s your fingers at stake.
And that’s where a professional-grade tool, like the PL8 Professional Mandolin, comes in. Its non-slip base means there’s no sliding during use and its hand guard secures food for stable slicing.
There are also four thickness settings, as well as the option to julienne and waffle-cut. So, beyond cucumbers, you can julienne for a fresh vermicelli salad, slice for creamy, dauphinoise potatoes, and so much more.
And if you’re a self-proclaimed kitchen klutz and want extra protection, then a cut-resistant glove makes the ideal pairing. In fact, Nigella Lawson forbids the use of a mandolin without what she calls a Game of Thrones glove. So it comes highly recommended.
