Florist Courtney Ray has long been aware of the power that scent has over our emotions. The founder of Daily Blooms flower-delivery service, Ray believes that the perfect arrangement takes you beyond the here and now. With her latest venture, Ode Studio, she hopes to capture that transporting quality in a more lasting form.

The studio’s collection of soy-wax candles is hand-poured in Melbourne. And while Daily Blooms has become known for its fast, same-day service, its sister brand is about slowing down and looking inward. “Ode Studio wasn’t born overnight,” Ray says. “It was a slow, deliberate journey. The candles are designed to inspire retrospection, and feelings of another place and time.”

So far, there’s a trio of scents intended to tap into stillness and serenity. The fresh Balm pairs a linen base with invigorating citrus and floral notes, while Bramble layers pine and guaiac wood with blackberry and jasmine. And, for something headier, Plume infuses musky, smoky scents with a hint of zest.

Each fragrance was designed with longevity in mind, meticulously blended to ensure it lasts over the candles’ 40-hour burn time.

Ode Studio approached Melbourne-based artist Julian Jones to work on the packaging after seeing the invitations he made for his daughter – and Daily Blooms brand manager – Alice Soda-Jones’s wedding. “Julian created the most spectacular invitations featuring an incredible landscape inspired by the special moments the family spends in Kennett River,” Ray says. “Having grown up in that area myself, I found his work so moving and evocative, and I couldn't get it out of my head when it came to creating our range.” His handpainted designs for Ode Studio were likewise inspired by Victorian landscapes.

Available for $49.95 each, or $139.95 for the full set, the candles make for a perfect housewarming present. But Ray hopes you’ll consider giving yourself the gift of daily ritual and reflection. “This range is designed to nurture a sense of grounded indulgence and balance in oneself.”
