The second instalment of Food For Everyone’s artist collection drops today, with six new posters featuring recipes from some of Australia’s best cooks and chefs. Ben Shewry (Attica), Kate Reid (Lune), Damien Coulthard and Rebecca Sullivan (First Nations Food Companion) and Elizabeth Hewson (Saturday Night Pasta) are among the food pros who’ve teamed up with local artists via the culinary poster shop, which donates money from each sale to fund meals for people in need.
Food For Everyone founder and artist Gemma Leslie says she put a lot of thought into each collaborative pairing for Artist Collection No. 2. “Playing matchmaker between our chefs and artists is so much fun. We undertake a lot of research first to make sure they are creatively and energetically matched, but ultimately there is a lot of trust between the chef and artist!” Leslie says.
The outcome is a series of six posters celebrating well-loved recipes in art. Lune’s coconut pandan twice-baked croissant by Kate Reid gets the trompe-l’oeil treatment from artist Simon Fitzsimon, Elizabeth Hewson’s spaghetti puttanesca is rendered in oil paint by Libby Haines and Attica’s jelly bean ice-cream by Ben Shewry is playful and bright in rich oil sticks by Nadia Hernández.
Damien Coulthard and Rebecca Sullivan’s quandong and Davidson’s plum iced vovos recipe is translated into bold shapes and strong line work by Aretha Brown, Cibi’s miso soup by Meg Tanaka (and her grandma) is rendered in simple and fun forms by Carla McRae and Africola’s Riverland yabbie boil by Duncan Welgemoed and Lauren Southwell looks cool and iconic in the hands of graphic artist Max Blackmore.
“Some of the artists involved have work that is displayed solely in galleries, like Nadia at the NGV, or only seen as street murals, like Aretha’s work,” Leslie says. “So the artist collection is a really exciting opportunity to own a piece of their art at an accessible price point.”
Posters are available in A2 ($120) and A3 ($90) sizes, printed on cardstock made entirely from 100 per cent recycled coffee cups, in a limited run of 300 per design. Food For Everyone donates the equivalent of 10 meals for every item sold through charity partner Secondbite, one of Australia’s largest food rescue organisations.
Food For Everyone launched in 2020 as a way to fundraise for foodbanks during the height of the pandemic. Since then, it has created works in collaboration with Alison Roman, Beatrix Bakes, Julia Busuttil Nishimura, Rosheen Kaul, Alice Zaslavsky, Andrew McConnell, Lennox Hastie and Hetty McKinnon, among others.
Artist Collection No. 2 is available now via the Food For Everyone website.
