Founder Phoebe Bell’s peppy homewares are inherently vibrant. The brand works against the wave of cookie-cutter finishes, encouraging customers to embrace individuality in design. This season it’s all about modern bohemia.

Sage & Clare is known for its vibrant, eclectic designs – bright beacons in a sea of neutral interior trends. For Melbourne-based founder Phoebe Bell, authenticity and creativity are at the heart of the brand.

“Part of what we do is encourage people to feel authentic in their creative expression,” she tells Broadsheet.

Bell works with designers Emma Haddon and Sophia De Leo to devise a muse each season. From there, they get to work bringing to life a universe brimming with colour, patterns and textures. The latest collection, Luna, delves into the return of boho-chic across the fashion and design worlds.

Bell says Luna is “into exploring spirituality and taking life a little more slowly… She travels in a way where she’s living in the destinations”. The team brought this vibe to reality through sun-faded finishes, relaxed silhouettes and a dash of avant-garde design.

Alongside Sage & Clare’s signature pops of colour – think hot pink, cobalt and indigo – there’s also “powdery, muted blues, earthy browns and corals” to ground the designs. The brand’s viral Nudie Rudie bath mats are updated in this fresh palette.

Patterns range from tonal florals to geometric shapes, each with their own spirit of nostalgia. Many of the pieces have a handmade element, like hand-printing or hand embroidery; Sage & Clare is known for its embrace of traditional techniques like woodblock printing, weaving, Shibori dyeing and tufting.

Bell’s soft spot this season? The two-tone Amata print, emulating the stamp of pigment on fabric in woodblock printing. “I like how striking it is, and the simplicity of it. I love patterns that feel adventurous.”
