“I love the idea of spending slow, cosy days in bed with my partner and baby, wrapped up in warmth and comfort,” says Madeleine Hoy. The co-founder of cult candle brand Nonna’s Grocer recently redecorated. Between the weather getting cooler and expecting her baby in May, she decided it was time to revamp her sleeping space – and cosiness was key.
“Comfort was my top priority,” she says. “I wanted soft, high quality materials that would make my space feel warm and inviting as I enter my nesting phase.” Using products from Pillow Talk’s just-launched winter range, Hoy balanced that feeling of comfort with functionality, without compromising her personal sense of style. “I’m naturally drawn to well-designed, practical pieces,” she says. “Things that serve both function and aesthetics.”
When decorating your bedroom, Hoy thinks it’s best to start with the essentials – a good bed frame, comfortable bed sheets and supportive pillows. For her bed, she opted for a premium mattress topper. “I wanted my bed to feel like sleeping on a cloud, and this topper does exactly that,” she says. Then, she added a soft yet weighty microfibre quilt, which is both hypoallergenic and has a natural anti-dust-mite treatment – ideal for a new mum.
Once the essentials are in place, it’s time to have some fun with colour combinations. For her new sheets, Hoy chose a bright blue cotton fitted sheet offset by a quilt cover. “I loved the idea of a fun, bright pop of colour with a neutral, grounding element to balance out the sheets.” Another pick is a more muted striped linen cotton sheet set.
Then she added a faux mohair throw with an earthy ombre pattern in neutral caramel and charcoal tones. “I wanted a mix of pattern and texture, and this throw adds just the right amount of visual interest,” she says. To finish, a two-tone striped pillow adds a nice contrast.
While Hoy loves playful design elements – pops of colours and interesting patterns – she still wants a space that feels serene. “I like to keep my bedroom minimal and free of clutter,” she says. “It creates a calm, restful environment that helps me wind down. Since I’m pregnant, setting myself up for a good night’s sleep is especially important right now.”
When it comes to large furniture decisions, Hoy says it’s fine to take it slow. “I prefer collecting pieces over time, rather than rushing to fill a space. Each item has more meaning that way,” she says. “For example, I have these beautiful stools that I inherited from a shoot and they naturally became my bedside tables. I find that the best pieces come into my life when I’m not actively looking for them, which makes them feel even more special.”
If you want to start the redecorating process yourself but are not sure where to focus, Hoy has a few suggestions. For her, the foundation of a cosy bedroom is a set of comfy linen cotton bedsheets that set the aesthetic and tone for the whole room. “There’s something about the stripes that makes the space feel a little like a holiday retreat.”
Other must-haves are a soft lamp, a bedside table and some meaningful art. “Those little touches make all the difference.”
