On the underside of Double’s rugs is a new technology designed to stop you crying over spilt shiraz.
This week the Australian label launched the country’s first line of machine-washable rugs. Each rug can be separated into two pieces and then easily cleaned to remove stains, leaving it looking (and smelling) practically as good as new.
Whether a messy toddler spills their Weet-Bix, a new puppy gets a bit too excited, or some red wine makes its way to the floor after one too many, Double promises stylish, mess-free living – after a go in the washing machine.
Here’s how it works: the rug’s top layer goes over a non-slip base that has a similar feel to a yoga mat, making for comfortable footing. Once the top layer gets grubby, you can throw it into the washing machine on a cold, delicate cycle before using a mild detergent to get those hard stains out. Hang or tumble-dry the top, then reconnect it with the base for fresh floor decor.
The first-of-their-kind rugs – which are priced from $160 for a small accent piece – are durable and sustainably sourced, and designed to be stain-proof, pet-proof and non-slip. They come in a range of sizes, materials, textures and designs, from monochromes to retro shags.
Double – the name a nod to its patented two-layer technology – offers five rug textures: chenille, cotton pile, jute, vegan shearling and a “Highland” material that has a soft, shag-like feel.
For contemporary homes there are abstract and modern Australian designs. Double also offers classic-looking Persian and vintage-inspired styles, laid-back Moroccan and bohemian motifs, and graphic florals and mid-century looks.
Double is also launching a program for design professionals, offering industry access to its mess-friendly rug solutions for client projects.
