The table lamp has a specific practical purpose: it’s a light source. But the beauty of this item is that it’s flexible in the way it fulfils that purpose. Whether made from marble and steel, or concrete and glass, table lamps take all shapes and sizes, so you’ll always find one to suit your own interior style and budget. Unlike overhead lighting, a well-positioned lamp – or two – localises the light within a room, creating a sophisticated but warm ambiance. We’ve narrowed down six timeless options from Australia and abroad for your entry, study, bedroom or living area.
Hanna Table Lamp – $254
CB2 has long been a go-to in the US for those in need of affordable but well-designed furniture, and the homewares store is now shipping to Australia. This classic, modernist dome light has such a simple sillouette that it will work nicely just about anywhere in your home. White will endure for the next 20 years, but it also comes in a dusty pink and brass combination for those who want to incorporate recent colour trends.
JWDA Concrete Table Lamp – $450
This lamp by Swedish design studio Menu juxtaposes delicate lines with a restrained use of raw materials. The sophisticated brass “on” switch contrasts subtly with the concrete base, and the frosted shade diffuses a warm light. It’s simple, but it’s also pure luxury, available from online Australian design store Surrounding.
Aplin Light – $350
In this clever example of engineering and design, Sydney-based Aplin Creative has taken a lamp’s power cord and, rather than concealing it, made a feature of it, giving the lamp the appearance of its shade floating above its base. A contemporary take on the traditional fabric shade, this steel lamp comes in black or white, from Sydney’s Surry Hills design store Spence and Lyda.
Sinnerlig Lamp – $49
British designer Ilse Crawford can do no wrong, and her hugely popular collaboration with Ikea is no exception. The Sinnlerlig Lamp, made of glass and cork, will work in a refined space just as comfortably as in a room that’s more industrial or eclectic in style.
Arancini Jnr Lamp – $995
The modernist Arancini lamp by Melbourne design studio Moda Piera comes in two elegant combinations: travertine and brass, or walnut and brass. The lamps are handmade in small batches, so each one is different. This unique, geometric piece will add sophistication, and serious character, to one lucky corner of your home.
Surface Sconce Stone – $2475
Make a gallery out of your hallway, or elevate your living room with this sculpture that also happens to be a lamp, made by one of Australia’s most influential product designers. Carved from solid marble, Henry Wilson’s moon-like sconce would fit nicely in a 1970s Roman palazzo (it comes with an equally opulent price-tag). This is an investment piece, and one that will give you joy for decades to come. Wilson also offers the same design in less costly finishes, such as blackened bronze and silver matte gunmetal
