Sunshine is back, and just like that, so are outdoor hangs, impromptu picnics and an overall urge to be more spontaneous.

To get in the mood, we’ve been eyeing tablecloths to spruce up outdoor dinner parties – ones that can also double as fun grass-scaping blankets when we’re operating sans table. And of course, the quirky serveware to go with it (think chilli-adorned bottles, seahorse-inspired knives and sunny wine decanters).

Indoors, we’re investing in fresh vases to show off the best of spring blooms, courtesy of local makers Eun Ceramics, Yolkeye and McMullin. But that’s just the start. Here’s everything the Broadsheet team has on its homewares wishlist in October.

Maggie Zhou, fashion editor-at-large

I’m back to popping hay fever tablets on the daily which can only mean one thing: spring is officially here. I’ve been itching for daylight savings to kick in to get hold of those warmer and brighter evenings. I just got my friend one of Maison Balzac’s chilli bottles which I myself am now eyeing.

To spruce up my tablescapes, I’m looking for a new tablecloth. I’m currently tossing up between this Variety Hour one and this Bonnie and Neil one. The sunny weather is inspiring me to get back into baking, and these Fat Tuesdays’ measuring cups made from pre-consumer plastic serve as good inspiration. In the world of savoury food, I’ll be consulting Rosheen Kaul’s Secret Sauce recipe book. And, if we’re dreaming big, I’d love one of Eun Ceramics’ floral statement vases. They’re a piece of art in their own right; I’ve never seen anything more breathtaking.

Sometimes you have to give in to the urge to purchase something ridiculous, gorgeous, outre and non-practical. For me that time is now, purely inspired by these stone-cold fab Nail ceramics from Korean brand Nuflaat. Holding them makes you look like you have dramatic pointy blood-red nails! I have no use for them, but I need them immediately! Just looking at them makes me feel all special inside!

In a similar vein, the rest of this month’s picks are purely wants-not-needs. Pretty stuff I’ve had my eye on that I’m finally gonna add to basket:

• The hilariously named Community FB Group Art Print from artist Phoebe Paradise. I love her depictions of Brisbane – you can almost smell the smooshed jacaranda leaves in the background.
• Sage and Clare’s animal print Odette round bath mat , which will bring some much-needed mob-wife aesthetic to my shower room.
• Yolkeye’s handmade QP Mayo vase – it comes delightfully pre-squished and will look right at home among the real condiments in my kitchen.
• Lila Rasa’s Mexican-inspired Sacred Heart ornament from Wolf & Badger , for goth maximalist reasons.
• And this very pretty mooncake gift box from Koko Black that I might share with friends or just gulp down all by myself.

If past years are anything to go by, I’m the kind of person who doesn’t buy a diary until the calendar’s well into March. But for once I’m (miraculously) getting organised early with this linen-bound planner from Bespoke Letterpress. It’ll sit pretty on my desk – and hopefully help me get my shit together for real this time.

Speaking of the new year, we have guests visiting from overseas in summer, so I’m on the hunt for a sofa bed to make everyone comfortable. I’m eyeing Lifely’s Cushie modular in cream – lightweight, adaptable and cosy. I’d dress it up with a linen throw and some fun cushions like this textured striped one from Sheet Society. The perfect afternoon would find me collapsed on that couch, watching Girls (I’ve just started) and sipping something warm from these very chic JW Anderson x Wedgewood mugs , if I could.

I love hosting. Yapping with friends over good food, wine and music – there’s really nothing better. We’re a take-our-sourdough-seriously household, so when Maison Balzac teamed up with Sonoma on a set of artisanal woven baskets , it was a no-brainer for dinner parties.

Swipe on some Victorian cultured butter (courtesy of Madeleine ) with antique knives from local curator Un Posto , and wash it down with a Tassie drop I recently enjoyed at Schole – and voila – a tres happy palate.

My (borderline unhealthy) obsession with lighting means I know just how much it sets the mood. One design I’ve had my eye on is this fibreglass floor lamp by Aussie designer Fomu Studio. And when the night calls for a little more energy, the soundtrack will be Cousin’s new dub-techno release – still in stock at Hub 301.

The end of winter has me breaking out of some seasonal feelings, and I’m in a zone of decluttering and introducing a lighter vibe across my house. For my bedroom, I’m looking at this Hakusho slip-cast vase for the occasional spring botanical pickup, fresh pinstripe linen sheets, and Aesop’s sculptural incense holder.

I’ve also started entertaining more with the recent sunshine, and I’ve been fixating on how ugly tea towels can look bunched up on the oven handle. So I’m investing in some nice Dusen Dusen spiralled towels. They’ll make for a hypnotic pairing with No.22’s Eye platter. And it’s more of a bucket-list item than a wishlist, but I loved the travertine revival and I have the perfect space to put this MCM House outdoor table. Anyone?

My beloved incense holder from Corey Ashford has a new sister and I can’t wait to add her to my collection. The Scallop design feels so right for summer and will pair perfectly with the label’s Supper Club blend of cedar, tobacco and apricot. While scrolling the site, the Madeleine Box in an emerald-hued marble somehow tripped and fell into my cart too (finally, a place to hold all my special pieces of jewellery).

The warmer weather is inspiring me to inject a bit of colour into my space. And just in time, Bed Threads has dropped a new bathroom collection in the same playful hues as the recent organic cotton bedding launch. The Berry shade feels like a sweet and sunny match for my space.

Holly Bodeker-Smith, newsletter editor

Spring is springing and getting all up in my sinuses. But it won’t stop me from spending Sundays potting and re-potting plants on my tiny sharehouse balcony. I’m stocking up on seeds from The Diggers Club like silverbeet and spinach , plus some marigolds to keep the bugs at bay. Back inside, I’m decking out my living room with this mid-century modular shelf and this vintage rattan day bed. And I’m thinking about finally hitting go on this throw-slash-wall-hanging by Slow Down Studio, for splaying out over during picnics or burying myself under during summer afternoon naps.

Lucy Bell Bird, national assistant editor

Daylight savings has rolled in with its warm summer nights and long days, and I’ve become a whole new person. I get a new lease on life. I’m in my bright, fun, sunny era – and I want my homewares to match. I’ve got my eyes on these lemon yellow napkins from Bed Threads , which would sit on my table alongside this sunny decanter from Maison Balzac’s collaboration with a Spanish brand. I also recently nabbed these pink and amber Martini glasses from Fazeek , which are sparking a lot of joy. And why not triple down on yellow with some pans from Molly Baz’s Our Place collection ? And then just for whimsy and fun, I’m buying a tart-shaped candle and one of those little lemon squeezy fish.

Grace MacKenzie, Sydney food and drink editor

Our new rental has a sun-soaked book nook off the lounge room, and I’m on the hunt for a desk that fits – with room for two. An L-shaped number is my best bet, and I’ll be searching Marketplace for something second-hand first, or hitting Etsy for something custom. I'm looking for an arching floor lamp to soften our too-bright down lights and a blushing shaggy rug , too. Plus champagne coupes (with delightful glass marbles) to help me write (joking).
