Hommey’s New Robe, a Hunter x It’s Olio Collab, and More Editor-Approved Homewares To Shop in July

Surviving winter comes down to two key moves: hibernating and hosting. For the former, our editors are adding to cart spa-worthy bath salts, plush velour robes and layers of fresh bedding. Add to the mix a few reliable reads and a new musky candle by Maison Margiela, and the self-care set-up is complete.
When it’s time to emerge from your cocoon, winter socialising happens at the dinner table. This month’s picks include bitey condiments, host-ready cookbooks and plenty of tablescaping pieces to impress. Here’s everything the Broadsheet team is shopping for in July.

I’ve always been obsessed with speckled ceramics from Puglia. While I save up for the real antique ones, this discounted splatterwear dish is in my cart. It feels fitting in the middle of dinner party season, which is the main thing getting me through this dreary Melbourne winter. Also for the party, I’m eyeing off these swirly brown candleholders and this elegant off-white cutlery set. And to really turn up the fun times, I’ve been dreaming of one of Ooni’s pizza ovens (so I can leave the cooking to the guests). Finally, I just locked down a king-sized doona by Aussie brand Bonny, so I’m zhooshing up my entire sleep situation now. Next on the list is this dreamy double-sided quilt cover set from I Love Linen. It’s all about the burgundy, baby.

I’m creating this list while I’m rugged up in a puffer jacket with a hot water bottle in my lap, which is to say, winter’s still got a strong hold on me. I recently wrote a feature on Waverley Mills, Australia’s last working wool mill. The work that goes into creating these products in Tasmania is unmatched, and so I have a newfound appreciation for its wool throws.
Earlier this year I visited Hay’s flagship store in Copenhagen. So naturally, I want to inject my home with some delightful Danishness. I love the look of this woven door mat. Speaking of European travels, Replica’s new Afternoon Delight candle has been inspired by warm vanilla madeleines and Parisian cafes. Tres bien!
Sheet Society is one of my favourite Australian bedding brands, so I’m eyeing off a couple of its silk pillowcases. I’m seeking a clear glass vase to add to my collection and I’m thinking this Marlo vase could be the one.

My apartment is slowly becoming an Eva display home. I bought the Melbourne-based brand’s Slideaway sofa bed earlier this year – now approved by my parents for medium-length stays in the spare room – and I’m keen to add the new hemp linen sheets to my bedding rotation. Also for the bedroom? This deliciously squidgy Aussie-made wool quilt from Minijumbuk.
My remaining winter ambitions are to bake more (perhaps with this super-cute Cooks Collective muffin pan from Myer and read more actual physical books. So Girl on Girl by Sophie Gilbert is also on my list – because who doesn’t want a sharp, pop culture-literate critique of fourth-wave feminism to get them through the darkest days of the year?
Finally, I’ll be chasing a bottle of Non wine’s newest non alc concoction, flavoured with oaked blackberry and plum. To pair with mid-winter feasts and fun feminist musings.

I’m done ignoring the unshelved stack of books I walk past each day – it’s time to hit “go” on a long sought-after item: Kartell’s Bookworm shelf. It’s an investment, sure, but one I figure earns its keep in eye candy.
First on the rack? The Apartamento cookbook I got for my birthday – though I suspect it’ll come straight off again. Cooler weather has me on a strict pasta diet, and the pesto genovese recipe is already on high rotation. To serve, Service Projects recently added pasta bowls to its stainless steel range (talk about timing), and Hay makes the chicest tools for a final crack of salt and pepper before chomp time – the latter courtesy of Pep, of course.

We are in the process of moving house, and I currently have everything crossed we land one particular apartment. It’s got a retro pink-tiled bathroom and a light-filled bedroom! If we win, I’ll be cosying it up with new cotton bedding from Bed Threads (espresso for the doona, butterscotch for the sheets), and a couple of peachy I Love Linen cushions. This zesty candle, a collab between Hunter and a local olive oil biz, will be lit, and Ikkari’s Roman chamomile room spray spritzed liberally throughout. There’ll be rosy glasses of Tom Wine, from darling Blue Mountains winery Frankie & Mo’s, to celebrate when (if) we get the keys.

Lately, I’ve been loving staying home. Dinner at mine with the girls, takeaway on the couch, tea in bed in the morning. Not going out has never felt so good. So, I’m looking for ways to zhoosh up my space and step up my home styling. I’m looking forward to stepping up my hosting game with a new tablecloth from Kip & Co, which will match perfectly with these drippy candles from Maison Balzac. I’m keen to lay my table with the new In the Roundhouse plates, which were designed by South Australian artist Billie Justice Thomson. I want to cook for my mates with the cute-as-a-button oils from Yia Yia and Friends because I think they would look adorable on the counter. Then once everyone’s gone home I’ll light this fancy Jo Malone candle and collapse onto the couch under this olive and oatmeal throw from Bed Threads.

A tablecloth, swirled cutlery, tinted wine glasses and tapered candles
I recently helped dream up a lush tablescape for a friend’s birthday dinner – fruits, flowers, candles, the whole lot. I’ve never felt more joy, and now I’m itching to dress more tables (and host a few dinner parties of my own).
If I had free rein, I’d start with this brown linen tablecloth, then set the table with Maison Balzac’s chic, escargot-esque cutlery set and pour lo-fi drops into these hammered wine glasses. To finish? These sky-high tapers from Hall of Flame, which quite literally elevate the look.
In short: please hire me for all your dinner party needs – it’s more for me, but also for you.

After dragging the thing around Sydney for almost a decade, my partner and I just replaced our old bedframe with Koala’s Balmain bed base. (Solid as a rock!). But alas – we slept on these very nice floating bedside tables (regrettable!). A new bed calls for new bedding, so we’re coveting this plush khaki quilt cover from Aura Home and a stripey organic cotton sheet set from Sheet Society. Good night, world.

Hommey just released a lush velour robe that I’ll be cocooning myself in for the remainder of winter. Once I’ve donned my post-soak robe, I’ll be lighting Maison Margiela’s Afternoon Delight candle – a soft yet spicy aroma that smells like freshly baked madeleines from a French bakery. My self-care evening ends when I hop into this Sage & Olive quilt set from Bed Threads. I love that it can be used as a lighter cover in summer and an extra layer in winter – plus, the two-tone colour means you can change it up whenever you get bored.
Over in the kitchen, I’ve been eyeing off this Sabre Paris cutlery set to chic-ify meal time. When dinner calls for one, I’ll flick through this cover from Side Note, before styling it with a stack of others on my coffee table.

I’m a summer baby and the only way to get through winter (beyond booking a flight ticket to sunny Europe) is to romanticise it. Sure, I can surround myself with cushy mod cons like my radiator heater and plush robe (it’s on sale right now), but few things feel as glamorous as a hot midday bath. With Baina’s cloud-soft organic cotton towels, the warm glow of Fazeek’s cedarwood and saffron candle and the calming scent of Ikkari bath salts, I close my eyes and, for a moment, drift to a hilltop bathhouse.
