Tsu Lange Yor’s Throw, Maison Balzac’s Handcare Drop and More Homewares on Our August Wishlist

Spring is flirting with us right now. And we’re getting our homes ready for when things get serious.

Lightweight doonas are involved, along with fresh bedding to dress them with. Warm-weather entertaining is also on the radar, with resin champagne buckets offering the only chill we’ll take as the days heat up.

Artwork makes a cheerful choice for a seasonal refresh, courtesy of Nicole Nelius, Tjanpi Desert Weavers and Ricordino. And while we (patiently) wait for daylight saving, another kind of art sets the afternoon glow with lighting by Brahman Perera and Franca Studio.

Whether you’re after your own space-lift or simply here for inspiration, this is what the Broadsheet team has on its homewares wishlist in August.

I’m on an endless mission to make my apartment cosier, so my new goal is to have a rug in every room. Love her or hate her – and I love her – Gwyneth Paltrow makes a good one. I’ve been eyeing this Ruggable x Goop collab jute rug for my bedroom. I want something quite neutral in my study, and love the shade of this olive Orchards Rug from MCM House. I’d love an unintrusive doormat where I can ask people to leave their shoes when they visit, and this one from Aura Home fits the bill. And a bit of abstraction in the living room with this woollen Edgar Rug from Soho Home. I also feel I need this handmade rainbow turtle from Osara – not a rug, but extremely cosy.

I’m living with a portable Temu lamp right now, and it’s as bad as they say. Or maybe worse – it switches off whenever it likes. My dream home is lit with beautiful (and reliable) lamps, including Tom Dixon’s space age-y one. That same space is dotted with artworks by Tjanpi Desert Weavers (like this woven basket by Ruth Bates) and has this special Dinosaur Designs side table. I’m in the process of refurnishing my room, and Eva’s classic timber bed frame is on my list, along with calming incense by Aussie label Gentle Habits.

Finally, I recently came across The Plasticians , two mates in Victoria who are turning plastic waste into delightful homewares. I’m loving their paper towel holders and eyeing off this technicoloured side table.

It’s been three years in my current house and I’m still looking for the perfect rug. I’m on the cusp of purchasing a Tiger rug from Tim Roodenrys, but I’m not sure I’m cool enough to pull it off. It’s like when I bought my first leather jacket, and felt as if everybody knew I was a guy who’d never worn a leather jacket before. It would go in the currently bare living room by the fireplace and record player, which would be a perfect place to play on Fourth Street’s backgammon set and swirl a Martini olive with these cocktail picks. You can see the vision right? Otherwise it’s warming up and I’m about to refresh my bedding at Cultiver, with a bluestone duvet cover and a pinstripe fitted sheet (flat sheet undecided), topped by this grey tartan throw.

Spring is in sight – and I’m squeezing in a few more self-care nights before the season changes and I’m never at home. The best ones take place in my bedroom, with fresh bedding, a luxe hand cream and a solid read in tow. The first comes courtesy of Bonny’s new drop , made from breathable organic cotton – a seasonal switch from flannelette. The second is Maison Balzac’s latest Mediterranean-inspired release , and the last is Cure by Katherine Brabon.

Other wishlist items come with a bigger price tag, like a lightweight doona from newcomer Puff and an updated light fixture. Brahman Perera’s ethereal design feels playful and a little dramatic – but I figure that just about describes me, so we’re a match made in heaven.

I’m fully invested in the little treat economy to get me through the final days of winter. Morning showers will also get an upgrade from Juliette Has a Gun’s addictively scented Not a Shower Gel. And I’ll make my space smell good too with this Intuition Mist from Aussie aromatherapy brand Vessel: herby notes of lavender, peppermint and patchouli are supposed to inspire calm and grounded energy.

Lounge room yoga will be a treat with Maat’s tiger-print suede top mat. And since animal prints are officially a neutral, I’ll pair it with this deliciously sculptural MCM-inspired Marlo vase from McMullin. It’s definitely the season to buy yourself all the flowers.

For more fun homewares, I’ll be looking to this Olive di Nonno print from Melbourne’s Ricordino (their Italo-inspired designs are a sight to behold), and hoping it’s not ironic when I pack my groceries in a Still Hip & Relevant tote from Sydney makers Well Spotted.
Finally, Asoke’s Maya resin champagne bucket is an early splurge looking forward to spring entertaining. The sun (and the champers) will rise again!

You don’t need an ultra-chic drink bottle wrapped in a leather sleeve with a matching strap, just like you don’t need a fancy butter bell for perfectly spreadable toast. But these little luxuries do make the everyday feel just a bit more special.

In that spirit, I’m adding this spherical candle – perched on a sculptural glass holder by local label Cillie – to my wishlist. Recently, I lit this candle from Bamford , and its frankincense and lavender scent instantly transformed my bathroom into a countryside spa.

If I’m going all-in, I might as well run a bath with these Anatome salts , then slip into this cosy Sheet Society x Rollie Nation robe. And that’s the day done.

Winter’s not over yet and this Tsu Lange Yor throw in collaboration with Zankov is ideal for nights on the couch. And my evenings feel complete when dessert comes served in chic stainless steel dinnerware , courtesy of Riise.

Another month, another fragrance to obsess over – this time in candle form, with Byredo’s Coin Laundry on my coffee table. White rose, pink pepper and musk fill the room with the comforting scent of fresh laundry. Lastly, this handmade serving board from Clash City Wood has been on my wishlist for a while, and it’s finally time to hit “go”. It’s made from recycled skateboards and makes the ultimate forever piece.

We spent a lot of time talking about the drink of the summer last week. Whatever it is, I want to drink it in one of these ombre highball glasses. And sticking to the colour theme, I recently discovered Ceilao, a Melbourne brand with pieces that are handwoven in Sri Lanka using 2000-year-old techniques. I’m hoping these gorgeous cushion covers can zhush up my tiring couch. Meanwhile, I’ve been looking for a book with a statement cover to add some texture to my coffee table and few photographers scream “icon” like Helmut Newton. I’ve also been eyeing off the gorgeous 3D-printed pieces from Franca Studio. The local label has a range of lights and vases in beautiful, fluid silhouettes – like this Mabel wall lamp. It diffuses light so beautifully – I just have to decide which room to put it in now.

We did it. We moved. Phew. I am physically exhausted from the trips up and down the stairs, but also emotionally from making strong cases for every single one of my vintage glasses and my school of silver fish-shaped jelly moulds. Now it’s time to lock in a sleepover-ready pull-out (like the Koala’s green-wattle Wanda) and freshen up our towels (hello to Hommey’s new striped beauties , and a bath mat for good measure). And maybe this home is when I finally hit “go” on Nicole Nelius’s melons, in blue and red.

In a bid to feel more grown-up, I’m trying to tick off some to-dos around the house. First on the list? Start actually framing and hanging artwork. I’ve been a longtime admirer of Food for Everyone. Its Pulcina Moka Pot by Simon Paredes print is one I’ve got my eye on. Second? Get more than two matching sets of mugs. I’ve already got a couple of Kinto’s Oct mugs and I feel like a set of four would be lovely.

I never thought I’d be a pillow mist person, but I’m a convert thanks to Kit’s Good Night Pillow Mist. Again, a tres adult purchase. Lastly, I’m stocking up on my bougie non-alcoholic drinks. I love Tina Drinks, particularly its 2.0 cans made with jasmine pearl green tea, raspberry and wax flower.
