Seven To Try: Aussie Doona Labels That’ll Keep You Cosy All Year Long
We can spend a lot of time (and money) kitting out our sleep space with premium Aussie bed linen. But how much thought do we give to the doona we’re unceremoniously shoving into that lovely cover?
These luxe Australian labels focus on cuddly doonas made from soft and fluffy materials, with an emphasis on eco-conscious production and ethical business practices, so you can rest easy – and stay warm (or cool) year-round.
Puff
Puff founder Beck Finkel knows design. She spent years at Abode Living before working at some of Australia’s most influential studios – including Fiona Lynch and Sally Caroline – and that experience is baked into the finer details of Puff.
The brand’s debut quilt is filled with ethically sourced white duck down (800 fill power, for those who care about loft) and encased in a 400-thread-count cotton sateen shell. Available in single through to super king, each quilt comes in two warmth levels – light or warm weight – to suit your sleeping style. A clever Puff Baffle System keeps the down evenly distributed, which means no clumping or cold patches. And every quilt arrives packed in the brand’s reusable cotton duffle (aka the Puffle).

Bonny
Melbourne-based Bonny is dedicated to creating the fluffiest doonas possible, with 90 per cent duck down filling (and no prickly feathers sticking out) inside a 100 per cent cotton casing with 400 thread count. Three doona styles – summer (from $349), winter (from $549) and the All Rounder (from $449) – are certified with the Responsible Down Standard, which ensures ethical animal welfare practices. And a hefty “fill power” across all styles means they can be squished down for storage, then bounce back up to their original dimensions.
Founder David Zwier reckons Bonny doonas should last around 10 to 15 years, so they’re designed for the long haul. The online-only brand also lets you try out the doonas and return them – without charge – if they’re not right for you. Returned bedding is washed and donated to people who might be sleeping rough, fleeing domestic violence or settling in Australia in a refugee centre.

Ecosa
Ecosa cares about your sleep. Alongside its range of ergonomic mattresses and pillows, the brand offers quilts filled with silk fibres. The material helps with overheating, meaning less chance of sweaty nights, and is biodegradable at the end of its life. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic. A 400-thread-count pima cotton cover also helps bring breathability to your bed. Choose from summer, mid-season and winter (a combination of the two) weights.

Go Kindly
A certified B Corp company (meaning it upholds the highest standards of social and environmental impact), Go Kindly donates 50 per cent of profits to support women and gender-diverse people experiencing housing stress and homelessness. The company has donated $100,000 to Juno and Women’s Housing Ltd since 2019. It also pledges to pay fair wages, use no single-use plastic packaging and manufacture locally.
Made in Australia with 100 per cent Australian pure wool filling, Go Kindly doonas are available in two weights: All Seasons (from $259) and winter (from $265). Plus, with all that wool inside, they’re extra breathable and cosy in all kinds of weather conditions. Like all Go Kindly wares, the doonas are made as sustainably and consciously as possible. Find them online to purchase singly, or in bundles with the label’s signature pillow range.

Koala
When you name a brand after an animal that sleeps up to 20 hours each day, you must be confident about your level of comfort. And in the past 10 years, Sydney-born startup Koala has grown from offering an OG mattress to a full suite of furniture and home goods, including comfy quilts.
There are currently two on offer: All Seasons duvet (from $255) and Balmy Night duvet (from $185). They’re both filled with the brand’s cluster loft fill and are encased in covers made from 55 per cent Tencel and 45 per cent cotton. The result is soft, cloud-like offerings for all seasons and all sleepers.

Sheet Society
Sheet Society may be named for its linen, but its doona offering is just as considered, with three fills to choose from. The Cloud Corn collection uses a fill derived from corn husk as an alternative to classic feather and down. It is biodegradable, hypoallergenic, breathable and thermoregulating. But best of all, it offers a light fluffiness with quick bounce-back that mimics the appeal of down.
For those who prefer natural fibres, the Wonder Wool edit uses 100 per cent Australian wool, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. And if you love the feel of traditional down, the Low Down range is made from 100 per cent recycled post-consumer down and feather fill. All three ranges come in light or medium weights depending on your climate and sleep preferences. You can also shop a combo bundle for all-season snuggling – the two weights can be used together to create the warmest option.
Ettitude
When Ettitude founder Phoebe Yu moved from China to Melbourne, she couldn’t find bedsheets that were soft, affordable and sustainable all at once, so she launched a label to do just that. Yu partnered with a textile university in Shanghai to create the world’s first 100 per cent organic bamboo lyocell fabric, for bedding and now quilts.
The Aussie brand’s Down Alternative quilt is filled with a vegan, cruelty-free down alternative spun from bamboo fibres and recycled water bottles. It’s lightweight, suitable for all seasons and designed not to clump, but it’s also hypoallergenic, free from harmful chemicals and naturally breathable – a big win for hot sleepers and those with sensitive skin.
