If you've ever travelled overseas, then chances are that at some stage you've walked up to a bar set up on a beach, ordered a drink, and as you took your first sip, wondered, "Why can't we do this at home?"
Enter the sun lounge at Bathers Beach House, West Australia’s first area of beach to be licensed, and one of only few in the country. Consisting of 20 sun lounges, the Fremantle bar allows guests to make the most of its beachfront location as well as its food and drink offering.
The area has capacity for around 40, and patrons will have access to Bathers’ entire range of beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. The food, however, will be a beach-friendly edit of the main menu: think less entrée-main-dessert and more the makings of a fun beach picnic.
Bathers co-owner Anthony Unmack is excited about the latest addition to the venue and will be refining the offering based on demand.
“We wanted to add something to Freo’s Fishing Boat Harbour for locals as well as our international guests,” he says. “Geographically, it’s the only spot in Perth with a small secluded beach with protection from the wind and swell where it could. It’s going to be about people utilising the beach in a civilised way. We can’t have 500 people in there.”
Sun lounges can be reserved with unreserved lounges available on a first-come basis.
Unmack told The West Australian he believes the approval of the new liquor license comes down to Bathers' absolute beachfront location and family-friendly reputation. The venue has long been allowed to put deckchairs on the beach, but only this week used its licence to serve food and alcohol on the sand.
