When Blackhearts & Sparrows co-founder Paul Ghaie enjoyed a “delightful” dining experience with The Saturday Paper last year, he wanted to give the paper’s subscribers the same. Through his independent wine stores all over Melbourne, Ghaie felt he could offer readers the best wines of the season.

Together, the advertising partners have launched A Wine Service, a selection of seasonal, hand-picked wines for all tastes and budgets. Although the monthly subscription service will begin in February 2018, one-off orders are available now. Wines range from adventurous to classic.

“We think of this as an aesthetic extension of what we offer in-store,” says Ghaie. “They are wines you might not expect, yet will always offer quality and approachability.”

“We [Blackhearts & Sparrows and Schwartz Media, which publishes the Saturday Paper and the Monthly] came up with three defined yet related categories to cover all bases and sensibilities,” says Ghaie. This includes a range of “esoteric” wines for readers interested in smaller makers, a “premium” range for high-end taste and “classic” wines for quality at a reasonable price.

Schwartz Media CEO Rebecca Costello believes this joint venture ticks all the boxes for readers of the Saturday Paper and the Monthly. “We want to provide our audience with a selection of wines that are interesting and intelligent,” says Costello. “The range is surprising and, I suppose, our content is, too. The synergy then between what we do and what Blackhearts does is perfect.”

Every order offers six or 12 bottles and contains tasting notes. “All three packs have been exceptionally well received and we’re excited to offer an add-on sparkling pack next week in time for celebrating,” she continues.

“The wines offer new ideas and an absolute commitment to quality. Something we think Schwartz Media’s audience will appreciate and understand.”

One-off orders are available now for delivery Australia-wide during the Christmas period. Check awineservice.com.au for more information and delivery dates over the holiday period.
