Messina’s limited-edition Christmas Coma – an enormous gelato trifle released annually during the festive season – is back for 2019. And this year, it’s going tropical.

The decadent behemoth has nine layers of passionfruit mousse, guava flummery (whipped jelly), macadamia crunch, coconut chiboust (lightly whipped coconut cream), mango-soaked sponge and mango sorbet. It’s finished with a pineapple, passionfruit and mango “mosaic” made with real fruit, and topped with a handmade chocolate coconut.

The Christmas Coma trifle comes with one litre of Messina’s own rum custard, and a Messina branded glass trifle bowl and cooler bag to help you to cart it home. It also comes with a box of five Messina Christmas crackers containing prizes such as free scoops and one golden ticket that’ll grant you a year’s supply of gelato.

The Christmas Coma serves 20 to 30 people (depending on your level of restraint) and costs $170. Pick up will be available from most Messina stores (except for The Star, Surry Hills, Richmond and Coolangatta) from 12pm on December 20 until 6pm on Christmas Eve.
