Sugar cookies artfully decorated with royal icing make great party favours, thank you gifts and lockdown care packages. But each cookie takes ages to colour in, especially if you go for a more complicated design.

Two Melburnians have come up with a clever shortcut – cookie stamps for fondant, that only take seconds to use.

Professional cake artist Monique Graziano and graphic designer Lisa Goodwin are childhood friends who’ve spent the past year trying to find a lockdown-friendly side hustle, after the pandemic cancelled months’ worth of wedding cake orders. Eventually they saw a gap in the market for cookie stamps that could be used on fondant for sugar cookies.

“We purchased a couple 3D printers and a laser printer and just learned the ins and outs of how to manufacture everything,” Graziano tells Broadsheet. “We honestly didn’t have any experience with manufacturing products so we learned everything as we [went] and now we both work on Lulu & Stone full-time.”

Online the pair sells cookie cutters in versatile shapes such as arches, circles, hearts and hexagons, but their main product is the cookie stamp.

They’re made with six-millimetre-thick frosted acrylic and all work as embossers, creating raised designs that stand out from the base (as opposed to debossers, which push the designs down into the fondant, creating recesses).

Goodwin designs all the stamps herself. Lulu & Stone specialises in minimalist line art, though some designs feature typography and chunkier shapes, too.

The most popular ones revolve around events and occasions, such as the minimal bride and groom for weddings, minimal mumma for baby showers and birthday candles, plus seasonal collections for Christmas, Easter and Valentine’s Day.

There are evergreen designs for any (or no) occasion too, like the beach girl, blushing blooms, pop, fizz, clink and underwater wonderland. There have been 134 all in all, with around 80 currently available online.

Once you’ve got your fondant – either store-bought or homemade – it takes just seconds to transfer the design. “You basically roll out your fondant and you can either press the stamp straight on top or you can roll the icing on top of the stamp. Once you get the hang of it, it makes life much easier and quicker than using royal icing or hand-piping everything,” Graziano says.

The stamps are currently made to order due to the high demand, with the pair hand-polishing each one themselves before sending them out for delivery. And while they’re originally meant for fondant, customers have also used the stamps for making earrings and Play-Doh activities with their kids.
